10 Ways to Reduce Your Personal Income Tax in Singapore for YA 2027

Every year, taxpayers in Singapore go through the same routine—filing their personal income tax and preparing to settle the bill. While paying taxes is a normal responsibility, many people do not realize that there are several legitimate ways to reduce the amount they ultimately owe.

From retirement contributions to family-related reliefs, educational expenses and charitable giving, Singapore’s tax system offers multiple opportunities to reduce taxable income. Understanding these options can help individuals manage their finances more effectively while staying fully compliant with tax regulations.

If you are preparing for the Year of Assessment (YA) 2027, it helps to understand how the system works and which actions during the current year could lower your tax bill next year.

Understanding the personal income tax process in Singapore

Income tax filing in Singapore follows a yearly schedule that repeats every year. Between February and March, the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) typically sends notifications to individuals who are required to file their taxes.

Taxpayers generally have from 1 March to 18 April to submit their tax returns. Once the filing period closes, the payment stage begins around the end of April. Payment can be made through several methods including GIRO instalments, online banking transfers or payment terminals.

Some individuals are placed under the No-Filing Service (NFS). Under this arrangement, income information has already been provided to IRAS by employers and other institutions. While these taxpayers may not need to submit a tax return, it is still important to log in to the myTax Portal and review the details to ensure the information is accurate.

What types of income are taxable

Before looking for ways to reduce taxes, it is important to understand what income is actually taxed.

Most people are familiar with salary income being taxable. This includes income from full-time employment, part-time work and freelance services. Bonuses and rental income from property are also typically included as taxable income.

On the other hand, some types of income are not subject to personal income tax. Examples include compulsory CPF contributions, insurance payouts, lottery winnings such as Toto or 4D, and profits from selling shares or investments under most circumstances.

Certain situations can fall into a grey area. For example, profit from selling property may not be taxable if the property was owned for personal use. However, if transactions appear to be conducted frequently for profit, they may be considered trading activity.

Understanding the difference between taxable income and chargeable income

Another concept that often confuses taxpayers is the difference between taxable income and chargeable income.

Taxable income refers to the total income that is subject to tax after excluding non-taxable sources. Chargeable income, however, is the figure that remains after tax reliefs have been deducted.

In simple terms, tax reliefs reduce the portion of your income that is taxed.

Chargeable income equals taxable income minus eligible tax reliefs. The lower your chargeable income, the less tax you may need to pay.

Why planning ahead matters for tax relief

In Singapore’s tax system, the Year of Assessment refers to the year in which your income is assessed, but it is based on what you earned in the previous calendar year.

For instance, YA 2027 evaluates income and qualifying activities that occurred between 1 January 2026 and 31 December 2026.

Because of this structure, tax relief opportunities must be planned before the end of the calendar year. Once the year closes, new actions can no longer be used to claim relief for that assessment period.

That is why understanding the available relief schemes early can be helpful when planning finances.

Income tax rates in Singapore

Singapore uses a progressive income tax system. This means higher portions of income are taxed at higher rates.

For the first $20,000 of chargeable income, the tax rate is 0%. The next $10,000 is taxed at 2%. As income increases, tax rates gradually rise through several brackets.

Once chargeable income exceeds $40,000, the rates begin to increase more significantly. This is why reducing chargeable income through legitimate reliefs can make a noticeable difference for many taxpayers.

Strategies that may help reduce personal income tax

Singapore offers a wide range of tax relief schemes. Although there are many specific programs, most fall into several common categories such as retirement savings, family support, education expenses, work-related costs and charitable contributions.

Each relief has its own eligibility conditions and limits, and there is also a general cap of $80,000 on the total amount of personal income tax relief that an individual can claim.

For many taxpayers, retirement-related contributions provide one of the simplest ways to reduce chargeable income. Topping up CPF accounts or contributing to the Supplementary Retirement Scheme (SRS) can qualify for tax relief while strengthening long-term financial security.

Another major area of relief relates to raising children. Parents may be eligible for schemes such as Qualifying Child Relief, Working Mother’s Child Relief and various caregiving benefits. These measures are designed to ease the financial burden of raising a family.

Providing support to elderly parents or grandparents can also qualify for relief. Individuals who live with their parents or financially support them may be eligible for Parent Relief, depending on income conditions and living arrangements.

Some employment expenses may also qualify for deduction if they were incurred directly for work and were not reimbursed by the employer. Examples may include client entertainment costs, professional subscriptions or certain work-related travel expenses.

For those who earn rental income from property, certain costs related to maintaining the property may also be deductible when calculating taxable income.

Charitable donations represent another option that both supports community organizations and offers tax benefits. Contributions to approved Institutions of a Public Character (IPC) qualify for enhanced tax deductions, allowing a significantly larger portion of the donated amount to be deducted from chargeable income.

Putting these strategies together

For individuals earning around $80,000 annually, the potential impact of these reliefs can be substantial. By combining several eligible relief schemes, it is possible to significantly reduce chargeable income and lower the overall tax payable.

This does not require complex financial planning. Many of these reliefs are automatically recorded by institutions such as CPF or registered charities and are reflected in tax records during filing.

The key is simply understanding which reliefs exist and ensuring that qualifying activities—such as retirement contributions or donations—are completed within the calendar year.

While taxes are unavoidable, careful planning and awareness of available relief schemes can help ensure that taxpayers do not pay more than necessary. By making informed financial decisions during the year, individuals can reduce their tax burden while also supporting their long-term financial goals and family needs.
